About TUMA
A Lutheran university rooted in faith, committed to academic excellence and to Education for Service & Leadership.
From a theological college to a chartered university
Tumaini University Makumira traces its roots to the Lutheran Theological College founded in 1947 to train pastors for the Lutheran churches of Tanganyika. Over the decades the college grew in reputation across East Africa for theological education and, later, for music and the arts.
As demand for higher education grew, Makumira expanded into a university offering programmes in law, education, humanities and science, while remaining faithful to its founding mission. Today it serves students from across Tanzania, Africa and beyond.
