Research

The Directorate of Research and Publication of Tumaini University Makumira (TUMA), is the University’s focal point in enhancing research and scholarly activities particularly in Christian theology, humanities, education, social sciences, music, and law. The Directorate aspires to activate the staff and students’ creativity and innovativeness in research that will lead to generation and dissemination of knowledge that can positively influence the socio-economic development of the people of Tanzania. The Directorate provides the overall coordination framework for research at all levels and ensures that research outputs contribute to the University’s overall Mission. Besides research, the Directorate engages in offering consultancy services according to the needs of the clientele but at the same time safeguarding the interests of the University.

In implementing its research and consultancy activities, the Directorate is guided by the following core values:

Encouraging and nurturing creativity and new ideas among lecturers and students through specific and crosscutting research issues.

Ensuring commitment to steadfast adherence to the highest academic ethical standards within and outside the University in order to safeguard its good repute and history, and increase its overall image for the realization of its goals and place in the academic world.

Inspiring research collaborative and teamwork spirit among the teaching staff and students, in order to encourage consolidated multidisciplinary efforts between different faculties and departments for the overall achievement of the University’s academic and research goals.

Promoting outstanding competence in academic products and services, through publications, conferences, associations, and networks

The Main Functions of the Directorate are:

To establish suitable research systems, procedures, and related guidelines to ensure that appropriate ethical standards are met by both the staff and the students.

To support Faculties within the University in sharing good practices in conducting research, writing reports, and disseminating results through publication.

To promote and support staff development in the field of research, consultancy, and publication through skills development, exposure forums, and networking with other institutions within and outside the country.

To provide appropriate management and quality assurance arrangements for both internal and external research projects, including systems for monitoring and responding to complaints so as to ensure research is conducted ethically and according to the set standards.

To strengthen and develop research partnerships with other organizations and individuals within and outside the country.

Internally the Directorate works with a number of bodies including Faculty Research Units, The University Research and Publication Committee, Faculty Research, and Publication Committees and the University Consultancy Sub-committee.

Externally the Directorate collaborates with other organizations inside and outside the country. Within the country, the Directorate works with the government, other academic institutions, the private sector, Church organizations, and the civil society in the provision of its various expert services in form of commissioned research projects, consultancies, and community capacity building initiatives.

At the international level, the Directorate partners on joint academic and research initiatives with several Universities, such as the University of Helsinki and Abo Akademi University, Finland; Erlangen Nurnberg , Germany, and Trinity Seminary, Ohio, Columbus, USA, to mention a few.
